Engage Seniors in Spectator Sports - They'll Love It!
Seniors Can Be Faithful, Die-hard Sports Fans Who Will Support Their Favorite Teams
Senior volunteer opportunities abound at spring training and other sports eventsThe City of Surprise Stadium supports senior volunteers named the Sundancers. These active seniors enjoy being part of spring madness that hits our Valley every March! Cities across the Nation have senior volunteer opportunities available in numerous sports venues such as golf tournaments and college sports.
Special accommodations for disabled seniors Diamondbacks Chase Field offers handicapped seating with easy access; likewise, Arizona State University's Sun Devil Football Stadium in Tempe, the Arizona Cardinals stadium and the Phoenix Coyotes arena in Glendale offer convenient handicapped seating and services. Wheelchairs are welcome!
Viewing sports at home
If a loved one can no longer tolerate a long drive to games or sporting events, a spare TV can bring hours of pleasure. Everything from poker to bowling, bronc-riding to wrestling, tennis to hockey, and high school to pro sports, can be viewed on a number of sports channels. I still remember my Grandmother rooting for pro-wrestler "Gorgeous George!"

While Mom lived with us and was homebound, we discovered that she was an avid fan of our Arizona sports teams. We enjoyed rooting for the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Phoenix Suns, the Arizona Cardinals, the ASU Sun Devils, and the UofA Wildcats on TV. In addition to Arizona sports teams, she followed televised PGA golf tournaments, especially when her favorite, Phil Mickelson, played.
Mom had macular degeneration, and no strength to walk on her own. However, that didn't stop her from being into sports. Although she didn't have good sight, the TV color men did a fantastic job of keeping her on track! Any senior who is limited by physical issues doesn't necessarily have to forego sports action.
Plan senior viewing
It is helpful for sports listings to be reviewed early in the day with your senior, so the event can be viewed at the right time. Televised game shows and sports were Mom's entertainment, and many nights Mom finished watching or listening in her bedroom. Even group care homes can schedule these events for their elderly sports fans.

Get team tokens for seniors to cherish
Before Mom celebrated her 88th birthday, we notified the Arizona Diamondbacks of her upcoming birthday they graciously mailed her a team pendant, and a photographed photo of one of their new rookies. Consider buying your elderly loved one a team t-shirt or jersey!

I remember waiting in line to get Phoenix Suns Lou Amundson's autograph at one of our local Trader Joe's one spring afternoon so Mom could have it. Mom really liked his spunk in game play.
Perhaps seniors can no longer attend games, but they can cheer their teams right from home with a little planning and assistance from family members. I really miss Mom's infectious enthusiasm over sports.
