Saving Money With Senior Discounts

Getting older should have some advantages, right?.  Here's an article that might help you keep more green in your wallet, Senior friends!
Senior Discounts for Baby Boomers
Baby boomers are reaching senior status at record numbers. Discounts for seniors are on the rise as retailers and restaurants chase this growing market!
How Seniors Can Participate in Senior Savings
Each retailer defines “senior” differently, with some using 55 as the magic age, others 60 or 62. So, everyone who has blown out 55 candles should check the business establishments they frequent, to find out whether a senior discount is available and how to participate. Some stores require proof of ID and a loyalty card, others simply take the customer’s word that they qualify.
There are several valuable websites dedicated to locating discounts for seniors. Sciddy.com has a growing database of retailers and service providers who offer discounts to baby boomers. Their website is free and searchable, providing discounts in eleven categories, from auto parts and home repair to entertainment such as bowling and movie theatres.

Document Family History Now!

History buffs like me have gathered many interesting real-life stories from older family members. It's important to document these stories for future generations.

Seniors are Links to Family Ancestors

Senior Storytellers
We seniors are the storytellers; we are important living links to ancestors for our children and grandchildren, so take time to document this vital legacy for them. Perhaps our younger generations aren't interested in family history now, but I assure you they will be at some point in their lives. How wonderful it can be if you documented their family tree to carry on!

Family Stories are Unique
Families may recall old family lore in conjunction with history and places. It's interesting to read a family story about Great Uncle Charlie or Grandmother Hulda, whether it covers heroic deeds, outlaws, eras, accidents, a skeleton in the closet, or Civil War, Revolutionary War, World War I or II experiences. Last season the NBC Network presented "Who Do You Think You Are?" on TV. It covered genealogical journeys of noted celebrities. Just think, your family history may be just as fascinating and entertaining!

Genealogy Workshop
Last week I attended the Family History Expo Program in Sandy, Utah. There were many new ancestry researchers, and to no one's surprise, some attending have been family genealogists for 40 years and more!

How to Cope with Senior Driving Issues

Have you reached the stage with one of your parents where their driving ability is questionable? Here's an article I wrote with useful advice.

Senior Driving Issues Are a "Hot Potato" for Families

A National "Mature Drivers Survey" conducted by Knowledge Networks in 2008, indicated from now through 2028, accident rates for ages 75 and over may cause potential "serious safety issues on our roads."

Boomers Concerned over Aging Parents/Relatives
The Boomer Generation expressed alarm and need for better communication with their elderly parents/relatives on driving issues. Drivers over age 65 experience higher accident rates, with the exception of teenagers, than any other age group.
Many Boomers feel that senior driving tests should be administered every one or two years after the age of 70. States may also apply certain restrictions on senior driving licenses pertaining to long trips, and driving at night. Bill Van Tassel, Manager of Driver Training Operations for AAA, states that only 25 percent of road travel occurs at night, but 49 percent of fatal car collisions occur after sundown.
